“How to make money with AdSense” is one of the most popular topics in Internet marketing forums and the subject of many books and special reports.

Its popularity isn’t surprising given the extensive coverage of AdSense in mainstream newspapers and magazines as well as the program’s importance in driving Google’s every-growing advertising revenues. Website and blog owners can’t help but perceive Google AdSense to be an easy way to make money online.

While it’s true that adding AdSense a web page is trivial — all you do is paste some JavaScript code that Google generates for you — learning how to make money with AdSense — especially how to really make money — is decidedly non-trivial. Like anything, it takes time and effort. There are no overnight successes with AdSense.

The key is to know what to work on. Four factors come into play:

1. Traffic. By far the most important factor is how much traffic you can drive to your pages. After all, you only make money when visitors click (or in some cases view) the ads shown on your pages. If no one’s visiting your site, you won’t make any money. If you want to make more money with AdSense, you need more traffic. (That traffic should be targeted, too, otherwise smart pricing will kick in and reduce your earnings.)

2. Niche. The niche you’re targeting also has a huge effect on your AdSense earnings. You need to target niches where advertisers are actively seeking customers: if there are no advertisers, you won’t make any money. The simplest test you can do is to search Google for related keywords and see how many ads appear in the “Sponsored Links” section on the right-hand side of the results page. If there are few or no ads, that’s a sign that the market’s not a big one and probably isn’t a great choice for monetization via AdSense. (But you may be able to monetize it in other ways.)

3. Content. AdSense is all about content. It’s not about search results. It’s not about random collections of scraped data. There’s a reason why AdSense users are called publishers: it’s because they publish content. You need great content on your pages, written for humans and not search engines. Content is what’s going to keep visitors on your site, looking for the information they need. The longer they stay, the more chance they’ll click an ad.

4. Optimization. Many AdSense publishers spend too much time trying to optimize their pages when they should be spending their time on getting more traffic and writing more content. Luckily, many AdSense optimization techniques do double duty as search engine optimization (SEO) techniques. Concentrate on the basics, like: * Blending ads by removing borders and matching colors. * Positioning the ads in the “hot spots” of a page. * Choosing the right ad formats. * Tracking performance with channels.

These and a few other techniques can make a dramatic difference in your earnings — but only if you have enough traffic.

Note that even a poorly-optimized AdSense site can make its publisher a lot of money if draws a lot of traffic with quality content in a competitive niche. Don’t place too much emphasis on AdSense optimization.

There are several methods online that many people use to bring additional income. In some cases, making six or even seven figures a year. Some of the known effective methods to make money online from home are as follows:

• eBay – eBay is known by many. It’s the premiere auction site, available online to anyone in the world with an internet connection. Since so many people use it, it’s a place where sales occur every second of every day. Many entrepreneurs who make money through eBay do it in one of two ways: One is by selling items they do not directly own by marketing listed items for a higher price, then purchasing said item at that low price and having it shipped to their buyer. This is known as “drop shipping”, and there are some sites who advertise teaching methods to drop ship, although at a cost. The other method is to advertise items listed on eBay for a commission paid directly from eBay, based on the sale price of the item. One of the most popular tools to do this easily is called Build A Niche Store, or BANS. It allows for easy creation of a web site with specific instructions on how to list specific types of items.
• AdSense – Google AdSense is associated with the ads often seen on web pages everywhere. One way to find them is to check for a label saying “Ads by Google”. These ads are placed on web sites by the web developer/webmaster. The income is from any visitors who click on these ads. A small portion of Google’s profit from advertising cost is given to the website owner for every click on the ads. To make a decent income through AdSense requires one or more websites and a lot of visitors to each website. This can be difficult to accomplish, and requires work and knowledge. There are products online that claim assistance with increasing AdSense income, but they are often expensive and do not always provide enough information to reach a substantial profit.
• Affiliate Marketing – Affiliate marketing is the business of selling products online for a commission. These products can be actual material objects (such as on eBay), or they can be digital products such as ebooks or software. The commissions for these sales can often be very high, in some cases as high as 75% of the sales price (or more). Affiliate marketing is a growing industry and is one that has several angles to approach from, to make sales and make a profit. It can be a challenging industry to learn, and is best learned through mentoring or direct tutorials. The best known source for direct help is through the forums on Wealthy Affiliate, which is a membership site. Any questions novices in the internet marketing industry may have are asked and answered in the forums, as well as within various tools on the membership site. There are also other ebooks available to teach affiliate/internet marketing although these books will not provide any question and answer sessions, which are found within the Wealthy Affiliate forums. Online Methods That Do NOT Work

There are several options advertised online to make extra money from home that do not advertise truthfully. Here are some of the examples:

• Online Surveys – “Free Paid Surveys” are often seen advertised online. The truth of these are that there are surveys available, but the payments made for each survey are minimal, and often require a membership fee to begin. The time required to earn money through surveys limits income to a severe degree. It is highly recommended that these be avoided.
• Type-At-Home Sites – The websites that advertise making money from home for the simple skill of typing are often scams. These sites only give basic information on affiliate marketing, and often give information to teach users how to do menial internet marketing work for the type-at-home site owners, while paying them minimal amounts of money. It’s highly recommended to avoid these, and to learn internet/affiliate marketing specifically, if this is the choice made to make money from home.

Automattic is reaping the rewards for years of hard work. Automattic is the company behind comment spam filter Akismet and WordPress.com, and of course the magnificent open source blogging software started by Matt Mullenweg. But how do they make money from their free blog hosting service?

The answer: like everybody else – Google Adsense. Still you probably have never seen a single ad on their pages… Here’s how they do it:

Cherish regular readers – they are your writers-to-be
If you’re a regular reader (let alone poster) on WordPress.com, cookies will prevent you from seeing ads. Regular readers don’t click ads anyway, they’re there for the content. Ads would be off-putting and keep readers from becoming contributors.

The small loss in revenue on regular readers is by far offset by the growth in “content inventory” if you can turn readers into writers. First build the community, then monetize. (I thought I remember Matt linking to a similar argument by the founder of Metafilter, but I can’t find the referring post anymore.)

Only show ads to searchers
Chances are you never visited Kris Hoet’s blog* – Kris is EMEA Marcom man for Msn/Windows Live. Although he has it mapped on his own domain crossthebreeze.com, the blog is hosted by wordpress.com. Yet if I refer you to his holiday report, you won’t see any ads either, even as a first time visitor, even if you delete your crossthebreeze.wordpress.com or crossthebreeze.com cookies (this cookie-killing Firefox extension will save you time).

Well, I was away on vacation last week but the busy bees at Google weren’t slacking off. New features for AdSense publishers are now public:

• More channels: The 100-channel limit has been increased, each publisher can now have up to 200 active channels (URL or custom). This is great news for publishers with small sites, you can define a channel for each page to see which ones make you money.
• More reports: For once, AdSense for search gets a new feature, the ability to see the top queries. And more generally, you can also save custom reports.
• Optimized ad formats: Google may vary the number of ads it shows in a given ad unit if it leads to better performance.

Last week I gave an example of how charities and non-profits can use Google Custom Search Engines as fundraising tools. I had one small concern with what I wrote, though, and that was whether or not it was OK for employees of the organization to click the ads on a CSE (custom search engine). As you know, AdSense publishers may not click ads on their own sites, and a strong interpretation of this rule would put an organization’s AdSense account at risk if its own employees were clicking ads. Although I had a solution in mind for this scenario — just create two identical CSEs, one with ads and one without, and make sure the internal folks use the latter — I thought it best to get the scoop right from the horse’s mouth. This is what I asked the AdSense team:

Say the American Cancer Society creates a CSE that emphasizes results from authoritative cancer sites and maybe even excludes some objectionable sites. It then monetizes the CSE with AdSense.

Say further that the society encourages its employees and its supporters to use the CSE for their day-to-day searching.

In this scenario, is it OK for society employees to click ads as part of their normal searching, just as they would on the main Google result pages?

The answer I got back from Google was:

Yes, in your example it is fine for the society employees to click the ads as part of their normal searching as long as they don’t have the intention to click only to monetize the society’s AdSense account.

Straight from the horse’s mouth. Of course, you can’t go around telling people to click the ads. In fact, you probably don’t want to mention the ads at all — just publicize the CSE and explain why how the CSE benefits the organization’s supporters. You might even want to make the CSE available without ads at first (only non-profits and charities can get away with this, actually) and then introduce the ads once the CSE has established itself.

Google announced its new pricing structure for Adsense Referrals this month. I am here to update this news to those who are still confusing with the new pricing structure. With the new pricing structure, publisher of Adsense Referrals may earn up to USD2000 every month if he/she could refer 25 publishers who earn over USD100 within a 180 day period from Google Adsense. Besides, publisher will be awarded USD600 if he/she could refer 20 AdWords advertisers who each spend more than USD100 in 90day period.

The new pricing structure is only applicable for Google Adsense and Google AdWords:

AdSense Referrals:
» When a publisher who signed up for Google AdSense through your referral earns their first $5 within 180 days of sign-up, you will be credited with $5.
» When that same publisher earns $100 within 180 days of sign-up and is eligible for payment, you will be credited with an additional $250.
» If, in any 180-day period, you refer 25 publishers who each earn more than $100 within 180 days of their respective sign-ups and are all eligible for payout, you will be awarded a $2,000 bonus (bonus payouts are limited to 1 per year).

AdWords Referrals:
» When an advertiser you refer spends $5 within 90 days of sign-up (in addition to the $5 sign-up fee) you will be credited with $5.
» When that same advertiser spends $100 within 90 days of sign-up, you will be credited with an additional $40.
» If, in any 180 day period, you refer 20 advertisers who each spend more than $100 within 90 days of their respective sign-ups, you will be awarded a $600 bonus (bonus payments are limited to 1 per year).

From Inside Adsense:

These rules will also apply to users that you have already referred but who have not yet reached one of the new earning/spend thresholds. For example, if you referred an AdSense publisher who has currently earned $2.00, you will be paid $5.00 if that publisher reaches the $5.00 mark. But, if you have referred an AdSense publisher who has already earned $10.00, you will not be paid $5.00 retroactively for that referral reaching the $5.00 mark. However, should that publisher eventually reach the $100.00 earnings mark within 180 days, you will be paid $250.00.

Last but not least, there is no more Picasa referrals option to put on your site. For those who are still using this referral code in their blogs, you can remove them now.
